How Can Chiropractic Care Relieve Back Pain

When you visit Dr. Cassara, he does a procedure, known as a chiropractic adjustment, using either a small instrument or his hands to apply a sudden, controlled force to spinal joints. The force works to improve physical function while correcting the structural alignment. Approximately 22 million American citizens visit a chiropractor each year, with around 35 percent of these patients doing so to seek help for back pain. This back pain may be the result of muscle strains, an accident or a sports injury although there are many, many other causes that get overlooked in every day life.

What Is Chiropractic Care?

Along with spinal manipulation, chiropractors make use of alternative treatments, all of which are designed to properly align the musculoskeletal structure of the body, although the focus remains on the spine. This helps the body to heal itself without the need for medication or more invasive treatments, such as surgery. This manipulation restores mobility of the joints which may be restricted due to a tissue injury. Tissue injuries occur as a result of repetitive stress, such as sitting without adequate back support, or as a result of a traumatic event, such as a fall. Chiropractor care addresses issues with bones, muscles, connective tissue and joints and may be used in combination with traditional medical treatments.

Chiropractic Care Benefits

Most consider chiropractic care and spinal manipulation to be effective and safe for the treatment of acute back pain. This type of pain occurs when one suddenly injures the back, by falling or moving something heavy.  In addition to back pain, this type of care works for those suffering from headaches, neck pain, fibromyalgia and osteoarthritis.

In many cases, the chiropractor adjusts the pelvis and lower lumbar vertebrae as doing so re-establishes the position of the joints and bones while restoring normal motion. A number of studies have been conducted on the benefits of using chiropractic care for the treatment of lower back pain. These studies, including one published in the April 15, 2013 issue of Spine Magazine, show chiropractic care greatly benefits those with back pain.

According to this study, patients who underwent treatment by a chiropractor had significantly less pain with 73 percent of those who combined standard medicine with chiropractic manipulative therapy stating their pain was eliminated, significantly reduced or moderately reduced. Only 17 percent of those receiving strictly standard medical care reported the same. This study shows the value of chiropractic care in the treatment of low back pain.

In addition to reducing or eliminating low back pain, there are many other benefits of chiropractic care for the treatment of this condition. Studies have found that this type of care is less expensive, more effective and has better long-term outcomes than standard medical care for the treatment of low back pain. The reason for this is chiropractic care gets to the root of the problem rather than just treating the symptoms.

How Is Treatment Determined?

A chiropractor needs to obtain an accurate diagnosis of the back pain before determining if chiropractic care will be of help. To do so, he or she needs your medical history, information on any current medical conditions you have, any medications you are taking, your surgical history and lifestyle factors. He or she then makes a determination as to whether or not chiropractic care will be of help to you. In addition, you should let your primary care physician know you are seeking the services of a chiropractor as he or she may wish to have some information passed on to the chiropractor.

What to Expect During Your Visit

After gathering the necessary medical information, the doctor begins the adjustment. He or she will place you in specific positions, depending on the areas in need of treatment. In many cases, treatment takes place on a padded table specially designed for chiropractors. He or she then begins to adjust the spine, restoring proper motion of the vertebrae. Some patients report hearing cracking or popping sounds during the treatment and other therapies may be used in conjunction with the adjustment. Common ones include stretching, exercise, ice and/or heat and electrical stimulation. The chiropractor determines which will be of most benefit for your particular situation.

If you are suffering from back pain, make an appointment with a chiropractor. The adjustments made to the spine benefit a majority of people and are non-invasive. Many find they benefit greatly from this type of care and see results in a short period of time, sometimes as often as the first visit.
